Chicago Apartment Moving Tips: Walk-Ups, High-Rises & Parking
Moving apartments in Chicago comes with its own challenges. These tips will help your move go smoothly, whether you live in a three-flat or a downtown high-rise.

Walk-ups and three-flats
Many Chicago apartments are in walk-up buildings with narrow front or back stairs. Measure large items like sofas, box springs, and dressers before move day. Furniture that can be taken apart (bed frames, table legs) should be disassembled to make it easier to carry.
High-rises and elevator reservations
Most high-rise buildings require you to reserve the service elevator and loading dock for a set time window. Book this as soon as you know your move date, and share the time with your movers. Some buildings also ask for paperwork from the moving company in advance, so ask your building manager what they need.
Parking the truck
Parking is often the hardest part of a Chicago move. Check whether you need temporary no-parking signs for your street, and look at alley access if your building has a back entrance. The closer the truck can park, the faster (and cheaper) your move will be.
Timing your move
Many Chicago leases start on the first of the month, so the last days of the month are very busy. Book early, and if possible choose a weekday or a mid-month date.
Protecting your deposit
Take photos of your old apartment after it is empty. Good movers protect doorways and floors, which helps you avoid damage charges when you move out.
