8 weeks before your move
- Set your moving date and request quotes from movers.
- Make a moving folder (paper or digital) for quotes, receipts, and leases.
- Walk through your home and decide what you will keep, sell, donate, or throw away.
- If you rent, give notice to your landlord according to your lease.
6 weeks before
- Book your movers and confirm the date in writing.
- Order boxes, tape, and packing paper, or ask your movers to bring them.
- Start packing items you rarely use: seasonal clothes, books, decorations.
- Schedule junk removal for furniture and items you are not taking.
4 weeks before
- Change your address with the post office, your bank, and subscriptions.
- Schedule utilities (electric, gas, internet) to stop at the old home and start at the new one.
- Ask your building about elevator reservations, loading-dock times, and parking for the truck.
- Keep packing room by room and label every box with the room and contents.
1 week before
- Confirm the arrival time and both addresses with your movers.
- Pack an “open first” box: chargers, toiletries, medicines, documents, snacks, and a change of clothes.
- Defrost and clean the freezer if you are moving it.
- Finish packing everything except daily essentials.
The day before and moving day
- Take photos of electronics wiring before unplugging them.
- Keep valuables, jewelry, and important papers with you.
- Clear a path to the door and make sure there is a place for the truck to park.
- Do a final walk-through: closets, cabinets, garage, and basement.
