How to Pack Clothes and Books for Moving

Clothes and books take up a lot of space in most homes. Packing them the right way saves time, boxes, and your back.

Declutter first

Before you pack, donate clothes you haven’t worn in a year and books you won’t read again. Fewer items means fewer boxes and a faster move.

Hanging clothes

Wardrobe boxes let you move hanging clothes straight from the closet. A cheaper option is to group hangers together and pull a large trash bag over them from the bottom up.

Folded clothes

Keep folded clothes in dresser drawers if the dresser isn’t too heavy, or pack them in medium boxes or suitcases. Vacuum bags are great for bulky sweaters and bedding.

Books: use small boxes

Books are heavy, so always use small boxes. Pack books flat or standing upright with the spine against the side of the box, and fill gaps with paper so they don’t shift.

Label clearly

Label each box with the room and contents, such as “Bedroom — winter clothes” or “Office — books.” This makes unpacking much faster.
