Declutter Before You Move: What to Keep, Donate, or Haul Away

Every item you move costs time and money. Decluttering before moving day makes packing faster and can lower your moving quote.

By the Helpbit247 moving team · Updated November 2026

Start early

Begin decluttering 6–8 weeks before your move. Go room by room and sort everything into four groups: keep, sell, donate, and throw away.

Room-by-room ideas

  • Kitchen: duplicate utensils, old pans, expired food, and appliances you never use.
  • Closets: clothes you haven’t worn in a year.
  • Garage and basement: old paint, broken tools, unused exercise equipment.
  • Living areas: worn-out furniture that won’t fit your new space.

Ask yourself three questions

Have I used it in the last year? Will it fit in my new home? Would I buy it again today? If the answer is no, it’s probably time to let it go.

Schedule junk removal

Book junk removal for large items like old mattresses, sofas, and appliances a week or two before your move. That way your home is clear when it’s time to pack.

What about items you’re not sure about?

Short-term storage is a good option for things you want to keep but don’t need right away.
